Characterization – Banquo

Banquo is the ancestor of King James the first to whom the play Macbeth honors. Banquo is a man of honor and respect. He takes the role of Macbeth’s friend, co-conspirator as well as his greatest threat. Banquo is presented in a manner much like his decedent King James has a level of interest in witchcraft such as that of the weird sisters. Banquo is trustworthy, honorable but suspicious. When Macbeth contemplates whether the future will hold for him the throne, Banquo appears to believe in the prophecy of the weird sisters that Macbeth shall succeed Duncan as the King but Macbeth fears what is to follow, that Banquo’s children too will succeed the throne. It is in this scene that Banquo both supports Macbeth’s vision of taking the throne from Duncan, even having a hand in his assassination or Banquo may be already plotting against Macbeth to fulfill his future and the future of his children. Though Banquo may appear suspicious he still retains his character of good nature. While Macbeth is dynamic in the sense he conflicts with himself about overthrowing the king and what violence is ahead of him, Banquo often remains calm and focused. His character may be interrupted as Order while Macbeth and his internal conflict represent a chaotic nature. But that’s just my opinion.
