The play begins around 11th century in the very bucolic Scotland. It opens with the three witches during a very murky storm. This may seem to be a paltry detail to a tyro but it is actually a very important piece of information and also gives some foreshadowing into the play. After the scene with three witches it moves onto a large open battlefield where both sides are unremitting and are stuck in a stalemate. The weird sisters show up in this scene as well and again bring the gloomy weather with them and make the scene seem darker and more grim. After the battle scene Shakespeare goes to a very bestial scene in which the thane of cawdor is beheaded. Beheading was a form of entertainment in those times and people were often calumniated and would be beheaded.
